Free range eggs

“Kirkfield Family Farm was established in 1912 in Manutuke  to the south of Gisborne on the Poverty Bay Flats. Beau’s grandparents Fred and Nell Kirk perhaps had a simpler life than we do today- milking cows, feeding chooks and picking fruit.

In the mid 1940’s Beau’s father Rodney on his return from the war along with  his wife Dawn continued to develop the farming operations with their young family. The land was developed into an orchard and vineyard- one of the first that was planted for the then fledgling Montana Wines. In the 1980’s Rodney was the first to plant Persimmons on a commercial scale for export into Japan. Farming continued to get more complex and intensive.

Now Kirkfield Family Farm is under the custodianship of Beau and Johnine and their boys. Farming in New Zealand has under gone major change in the last century and in many respects has become increasingly complicated and as farmers we have become further removed from our land our soil. We the Kirk’s have always been innovative farmers and looking back to Fredric and Nells days farming there are many aspects of their systems and techniques that modern farming has lost.

As a family we are redefining our farming system to incorporate some of those simpler but effective farming systems into our modern Free Range Egg Farm. Bringing the best practices of old  allowing our Hens space and freedom to express their natural habit.

Food is an expression of the land and environment it is grown in. We want the produce of our land, of our soil to be simple yet wholesome.
